Grounding With Trees: The Nature-Based Side of Energy Rod Practice

A riverside sunset, reflecting the outdoor, nature-based side of energy practice

It's easy to think of energy rod practice as something purely indoors — a quiet room, a cushion, a pair of rods. But a large part of the tradition Rods of Ma'at® draws on treats natural surroundings, especially trees, rivers and open ground, as an active part of the practice rather than just a pleasant backdrop.

The reasoning in this tradition (documented, among other places, in Valery Uvarov's research into Ancient Egyptian energy practice) is that trees, water and the earth itself carry their own natural energy fields, and that working near them — leaning against a mature tree, standing at a riverbank, walking barefoot on grass — is said to support and extend the effect of a rod session rather than compete with it. Some practitioners describe specific points on a tree trunk as more active than others, roughly comparable to the way chakra points are described on the human body.

You don't need any special equipment to try this yourself. Find a mature tree in a local park or garden, spend a few quiet minutes with your back against the trunk or a hand resting on the bark, and simply notice how it feels before or after a short rod session. There's no ritual required — the instruction in this tradition is genuinely just presence and attention.

As with everything on this site, this is a description of a traditional practice and anecdotal reports from practitioners, not a scientific claim about measurable energy fields in trees or water. Treat it as a nice thing to try alongside your practice, not a substitute for anything medical.

If you're new to the rods themselves, our beginner's guide to chakra balancing is the natural place to start, and our local guide to South East London covers a few green spaces in the area worth trying this in.
